RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a evolução de preço, quantidade e valor das exportações brasileiras de carnes, mais especificamente, verificar os efeitos das alterações recentes na política cambial sobre esse grupo de produtos. Os indicadores foram construídos utilizando números-índices, empregando-se a fórmula superlativa de Fisher e dados sobre quantidades e valores exportados em nível de mercadoria. Os resultados mostraram que as quantidades exportadas cresceram 10% em 1998 e 38% em 1999, com base no ano anterior. Os preços recebidos (US$ FOB) caíram 8% em 1998 e 13% em 1999, também com base no ano anterior. Embora carne de frango in natura seja o principal produto do grupo, os maiores crescimentos foram observados para carne de frango industrializada (em 1998, com + 105%) e carne de boi in natura (em 1999 com + 60%). A carne de suíno in natura sofreu as maiores quedas de preços (20% em 1998 e 25% em 1999). O Estado de São Paulo tornou-se o principal exportador de carnes em 1999, posição que foi ocupada pelo Estado de Santa Catarina em 1997 e em 1998.

BRAZILIAN MEAT EXPORT EVOLUTION, 1997-99ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to analyze the price, quantity and value evolution of Brazilian meat exports and, more specifically, to verify the effects of the recent alterations in the exchange policies on that group of products. Indicators built used index-numbers and Fisher's superlative formula as well as data on exported amounts and values on commodities level. Results showed that the export amounts grew 10% in 1998 and 38% in 1999, with a basis in the previous year. Received US$ FOB prices dropped 8% in 1998 and 13% in 1999, also with a basis in the previous year. Although chicken meat in natura was the main product in the group, the largest growths were observed in industrialized chicken meat (in 1998, with + 105%) and cow meat in natura (in 1999 with + 60%). Also, pork meat in natura suffered the largest decreases in prices (20% in 1998 and 25% in 1999). São Paulo State became the main meat exporter in 1999, position occupied by the State of Santa Catarina in 1997 and 1998.
